Wine Terms To Make You Sound Like A Sommelier

Unsure how a wine can be dry when it's a liquid? Aren't natural and organic the same thing? Sulfites, tannins, legs?

Wine terminology can get a little confusing when you start getting into the winer details.

Do more than smile and nod. Get up to date with wine lingo before our next gathering and you'll be ready to impress new friends or woo a lover.

Dry

When grapes become our beloved wine they undergo a fermentation process caused by yeast sipping on sugar.

A dry wine isn't actually dry - it's when there is no sugar left over, meaning it isn't sweet!

Natural vs Organic

A tale of two glasses of wine. Natural wine means no artificial ingredients, pure wine from the vine. Organic is made with organic grapes without any pesticides.

Tannins

Tannins are found inside grape skins and are released when grapes soak after being pressed. Sorry Grapes!

You can tell whether a wine is high or low in tannins depending on how dry your mouth feels after each sip.

Sulfites

A form of salt, sulfites keep the flavour of wine ready to tickle your tastebuds. Thank you for keeping our wine tasty!

Legs

Your wine isn't planning to get up and walk away. Legs are the streaks that form on the side of a wine glass after giving it a swirl.

Mouthfeel

Your mouth feels what?

Kidding. Mouthfeel is the sensation that wine creates. Think smooth, velvety, sharp, and rough.

Nose

We're not talking about the one on your face. Nose is another word for aroma. Makes sense right?
